Sour Cherries is a ten minute play following a moment in time as Arthur attempts to come to terms with the reality of his new life with his counselor, Freddie. Through his eyes, we see the effects his relationship with Rena, his former wife, have had on him and his ability to move on.
Sour Cherries was originally developed as part of the Mind The Gap Intergenerational Playwriting Workshop at New York Theatre Workshop.
“ Joe told me that he loved sour cherries as a kid. I think things we enjoyed as kids can still comfort us now and help us heal. I learned that sour cherries tend to fall apart and give in more easily than firm, sweet cherries. I also learned about Joe’s wife–they have been married for almost 40 years. I found myself wondering how two people stay married for that long, and the first thing that came to my mind is therapy. Joe’s wife is a therapist! And of course, therapy is a way for us to heal too, so I combined those two inspirations. Also, the name of the main character, Arthur, is inspired by when we were asked to describe ourselves as animals and Joe wrote ‘Teddy Bear’ ”

“ Hi! I’m Uchenna and I wrote Sour Cherries. I would like to dedicate my play to my lovely partner Joe. Over the past few weeks, I’ve been greatly inspired by Joe’s humor, kindness, and his great ability to be open. My play was inspired by his heartfelt life stories, including stealing maraschino cherries as a kid and his beautiful relationship with his wife and family. I was also inspired by, and incredibly grateful for, the healing nature of the meaningful conversations I’ve had with him. ”
