Steven Sondheim’s Company is a concept/comedy musical that takes place in modern-day New York City. Through a series of personal vignettes, it takes audiences through the everyday life of Bobby, a newly 35-year-old bachelorette. From her perspective, we go on an inadvertent mission to discover the meaning of life, love, and ourselves by watching how the relationships around her exist, develop, or fall apart. All in all, we discover that being alive means living with intention. Bobby sets out on a mission to love somebody, and not just some body.
hi, this is uchenna. thanks for coming to see our show! i am absolutely thrilled to finally be able to share this show with you all. when i first started writing my proposal in june, i could only dream that it would come together as beautifully as it has. this has been such a joy-filled journey, and i feel incredibly lucky to have this as my parting gift before graduation. “thank you” isn’t a strong enough phrase to fully express the gratitude i feel.
during my sophomore year, i had the privilege of seeing the 2021 revival of stephen sondheim’s company on broadway. it was one of the first shows i’d ever seen on broadway, and it was my first time hearing of the musical. i knew this production had truly captured my heart once each carefully crafted lyric continuously snuck its way into my mind at the most unexpected times. that’s when i should’ve known that this show would somehow find its way back into my life.
company poses the timeless question; what does it mean to be alive? through a series of personal vignettes, it takes audiences through the everyday life of bobby, a newly 35-year-old bachelor. from her perspective, we go on an inadvertent mission to discover the meaning of life, love, and ourselves by watching how the relationships around her exist, develop, or fall apart.
in the end, bobby realizes that being alive means having someone or something to love. being alive is having something worth living for that makes you want to work to give your life meaning. being alive means loving somebody or something–not just some body or some thing. she discovers that being alive means living with intention. and while she may not have all the answers, she learns to embrace the beauty of the moment and that what’s right will come.
i would like to take one last moment to thank everyone who had any part in the creation of this show. to our production staff: you all are the hardest-working people i’ve ever gotten the opportunity to collaborate with. thank you all for your tireless work over the past 4 months. this show wouldn’t be what it is without you. to our cast: the talent you all possess is unreal. from the moment we had you all in the room for callbacks, i knew that you were all going to bring an immeasurable amount of beauty to this production. you all have poured your hearts and souls into bringing these characters to life, and i’m so thankful for the dedication and creativity you’ve given this show. to the pit: you all already know i’m your biggest fan. without you, we do not have a show. thank you all for your work during this process. you all sound beautiful down there.
proud is an understatement. i couldn’t be more grateful for the opportunity to do a show like this with people like you all. thank you, from the bottom of my heart, to everyone who worked on this show or came out to see it.
with love,
uchenna <3
